Today is AIDS Day, India accelerates its HIV response as Union Health Minister Shri Jagat prakash Nadda leads World AIDS Day 2025 national observance.
India will commemorate World AIDS Day 2025 with a national-level observance at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, led by Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda. The event, scheduled for 1st December 2025, brings together senior officials, global partners, youth representatives, community advocates, people living with HIV (PLHIV), and frontline health workers. This united platform highlights India’s renewed commitment to eliminating AIDS as a public health threat.
Organised by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), the event reflects the Government of India’s focus on strengthening prevention, expanding treatment access, reducing stigma, and accelerating progress under the National AIDS and STD Control Programme.
National Leadership in the Fight Against HIV
Shri J.P. Nadda, along with key leaders from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare—including the Secretary, Additional Secretary & Director General of NACO, and the Director General of Health Services—will address the gathering. Their participation reinforces India’s determination to advance evidence-based strategies and ensure universal access to HIV services.
The presence of youth groups, community-led organisations, development partners, and PLHIV networks reflects the inclusive, collaborative approach that drives India's HIV response.
Youth-Centric Performances and Innovation Showcase
The World AIDS Day observance will begin with a youth-led flash performance, symbolising the importance of awareness, responsible choices, and stigma-free behaviour. Young people remain central to India’s prevention efforts, and their involvement highlights the need for continuous engagement with future generations.
Following this, a thematic exhibition will be inaugurated. It will showcase:

Digital innovations
-
Programme achievements
Visitors will also view beneficiary experience stories and an audio-visual presentation illustrating India's progress and priorities for the coming years.
Launch of New National Campaign and Key Resources
A major highlight of World AIDS Day 2025 will be the launch of a new national multimedia campaign video series. This campaign is built around three major pillars:
-
Youth & Awareness
-
Stigma & Discrimination
The campaign aims to increase awareness, empower communities, and encourage early testing and treatment adherence. It also focuses on ending discrimination against people living with HIV, which remains a key challenge.
Several important national programme documents will also be released during the event, including:
-
7th Edition of Sankalak
These resources will support policymakers, programme managers, healthcare professionals, and community organisations in strengthening India's HIV response.
The observance will conclude with a special live musical performance, themed around early diagnosis, treatment adherence, and living confidently with HIV.
India’s Strong Progress Under NACP-V
Under the National AIDS Control Programme Phase V (NACP-V), India has achieved remarkable progress. Strengthened testing services, expanded treatment access, and improved community outreach have all contributed to a more effective and comprehensive HIV response.
Between 2020–21 and 2024–25, India recorded significant improvements:
-
HIV testing increased from 4.13 crore to 6.62 crore
-
People receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) rose from 14.94 lakh to 18.60 lakh
-
Viral load testing nearly doubled from 8.90 lakh to 15.98 lakh
These gains reflect greater accessibility of services, stronger digital systems, and deeper community participation.
Long-Term National Achievements in HIV Control
India’s achievements over the past decade underline the success of consistent investment, evidence-based planning, and partnerships with communities and state programs. Between 2010 and 2024, India achieved:
-
48.7% decline in annual new HIV infections
-
81.4% reduction in AIDS-related deaths
-
74.6% decline in mother-to-child HIV transmission
These improvements surpass global averages, placing India among the leading nations in the global HIV response. The accomplishments demonstrate the effectiveness of targeted interventions, stigma reduction efforts, and comprehensive prevention and treatment strategies.
A Strong Commitment Toward Ending AIDS
With the national observance of World AIDS Day 2025, India continues to strengthen its commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat. The launch of new digital tools, campaigns focused on youth, and the release of updated national resources signify a robust, forward-looking approach.
Under the leadership of the Union Health Minister and with strong collaboration between government agencies, development partners, communities, and PLHIV networks, India is accelerating its journey toward an AIDS-free future.
